I came across this article by James Whetter, an architect with Jasmax. It's a quick read if you're looking for something to browse this weekend, but the following quote really caught my eye:

The impact of how we own property is often overlooked. For example: Is it really surprising that we adopt a defensive/protective mentality to our property when we are the sole owner and it is our primary financial asset? Does the proliferation of fences and resulting disconnection not follow from this attitude?
