... Or space to put one?
Or a spot to park a trailer for a few months?
Instead of renting your granny flat, or storing a trailer, what about 'selling' the space to someone?
No renting. Selling.
Some very quick and rough numbers:
- Buy a $450,000 house.
- Add a $50,000 self-contained unit.
- "Sell" half the unit to someone.
- Ask for $350 per week for a three-year tenancy.
- At the end of the three years (roughly), they get a 5% share of the property.
- If they're great to live with, do it again!
Sure, this is probably less profitable that charging them $250 per week in rent. But how many weeks of rent do you need to miss before the margin narrows to negligible?
Instead of money you might get:
- Help with home maintenance
- Free babysitting
- New friends
- Invited to a wedding
- Someone to look after the dog when you're away on holiday
And also. Those of us in the position to own a house at the moment are in a position of privilege. So lets be careful before saying its our right to make money of our assets.
Breaking the system might be less profitable, but its much more fun.
